Kalapana is an American pop-rock band from Honolulu, Hawaii that has been captivating audiences since 1973. The group was formed by childhood friends Malani Bilyeu and DJ Pratt, who auditioned together at the Rainbow Villa for Cecilio & Kapono. Their first concert was held at Chuck's in Hawaii Kai, and since then they have become renowned for their timeless songs “Naturally” and “The Hurt”.Micah McDermott, the creative director of Aloha Got Soul, believes that the agelessness of Kalapana's music is one of the primary reasons behind its success. To honor this musical revival, Aloha Got Soul is releasing a box set of reissued Kalapana music on vinyl. The domestic version of the album contains eight tracks, while the Japanese version is a two-disc set with a total of 22 tracks, including additional orchestral music composed by David Wheatley. In 1997, Kalapana released the Hawaiian version of Captain Santa Island Music with notes from international radio DJ Kamasami Kong.
All proceeds from the sale of special edition Kalapana items will go to the DJ Pratt Scholarship Fund and the Mackey Restoration Fund to help restore Mackey Feary's headstone. Kalapana has always been hard to define, particularly their first album, which remains the pinnacle of modern Hawaiian music.
